Jaila Davis was only 12-years-old when her father, a New York State Trooper was shot and killed. He was responding to a domestic violence call when the suspect turned on him.
When Joel Davis was killed, his family was devastated. He was the father of three children, Jaila was the youngest. Her 13th birthday was only days away.
He had recently begun to build a treehouse for her birthday. He was killed before he was able to finish it, though.
Officers did everything they could to help the family following Davis’ death. Recently, they found another way to help out.
Officers from the New York State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Watertown City Police got together to finish the project that Davis had started before he died. They wanted Jaila to be able to use the treehouse that her father had spent time building.
Thirty-five officers got together to finish the construction for Jaila. In less than a day, they were able to put the finishing touches on the project. The officers that helped that day were active and retired cops and state troopers who were close to Jaila’s father.
They added a ladder, finished the windows, put up a string of lights, and finished the balcony. They were able to finish the project so that Jaila could always have the memory of her father through the treehouse.
They also added a flag hanging from the treehouse’s balcony. The flag is the Thin Blue Line Flag. According to US Flags, this flag was designed to “represent the officer and the courage they find deep inside when faced with insurmountable odds…they symbolize the camaraderie law enforcement officers all share, a brotherhood like none other.”
This was such an incredible act for these officers to do to help Jaila and her family cope with the loss of their father. The treehouse will always be a reminder for them of their father and the support of other officers.
