The highly revered Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip recently celebrated a significant milestone. Fans and followers around the world rejoiced alongside the happily married couple who didn’t make a big fuss about their milestone, but it’s quite impressive to say the least.
In fact, they are the first British monarchs to reach this notable milestone which had since been unheard of. It’s one that has people ooohing and ahhhhing.
The royal couple celebrated 70 years of wedded bliss in November. They met as teenagers — she was 13 and he was 18 — and the queen has confessed to falling in love with him them.
While they spent most of their early years in the same social circles, their romance wasn’t sparked until she visited the Royal Naval College with her parents and met back up with Philip who gave the princess and her family a tour of the college.
After Philip returned from serving in the Royal Army during World War II, he and then-Princess Elizabeth announced their engagement. The young couple was wed a mere four months after that.

On Nov. 20, 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth stood at the altar preparing to wed Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. The event took place at Westminster Abbey and was attended by 2,000 guests. Their wedding decades ago was quite an elaborate ceremony.
Then-Princess Elizabeth was escorted to the abbey by her father King George VI. Prince Philip waited for her wearing his Naval officer’s uniform while she wore an ivory silk gown adorned with 10,000 seed pearls, crystals and a 13-foot-long train. Her wedding ring was made from a nugget of Welsh gold.
At the time, people could only listen via radio to the broadcast of the beautiful wedding ceremony. Now, the queen and prince are ages 91 and 96, respectively, and to honor their anniversary, they had a beautiful new portrait taken at Windsor Castle in the White Drawing Room there.
In the latest portrait, Queen Elizabeth is adorned with a cream colored day dress and wears a brooch from her private collection. According to CNN, this particular brooch was a gift from Prince Philip and was created from yellow gold, carved ruby and diamonds.
To commemorate their 70th anniversary, the Royal Mail released a special stamp collection featuring six stamps. The black and white stamps capture several historic moments in the royal couple’s lives.
The six stamps specifically depict the couple at their engagement announcement, immediately following their wedding and during their honeymoon. They are endearing!
While the queen may be celebrating several milestones, she has indicated that she has no intention of stepping down from her post, according to the Independent. She has indicated that she was serve her country for her entire life, just like she pledged to do on her 21st birthday.
