There are many different ways to try and rehabilitate inmates in prison. Tests have proven that certain methods and activities can actually improve the well-being of the prisoners.
In fact, prisoners from The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) in the Philippines are known for using dance as a form of therapy.
Many of their routines are choreographed to music from the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson.
Numerous inmates at the CPDRC became famous when a video of their “Thriller” dance routine went viral 10 years ago!
The video was posted as an educational prompt to other prisons to show that dance programs and regular exercise within the prison aided with discipline and prevented violence amongst prisoners.
This particular dance routine featured some very special guests. Michael Jackson’s longtime choreographer, Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid.
These three men coordinated the event and choreographed the routine which was performed to Jackson’s hit song “They Don’t Care About Us“. The music video of which depicts the struggles of prisoners and how society gives up on them.
After being asked about working with the prisoners, Travis Payne said “That was the most moving experience that I could have imagined. I didn’t know that it would be so special. I knew that we were going there to celebrate Michael.”
