Officer runs to wrecked truck. But once he gets to driver’s side, his heart stops

He froze for a few seconds and then knew exactly what he had to do!

Accidents happen every single day. As hard as it is to believe, cars are dangerous objects, and lives are taken all the time because of them. And that was about to be the case here, until Ohio State Highway Patrol Officer, Eric Devers, stepped in.

Eric had been driving along the highway, doing his typical patrol duties, when suddenly, he saw part of the side railing had been driven through, and was completely destroyed. And as he followed the track, he then saw the semi truck sitting in the grass.

Since the accident hadn’t been reported, he quickly ran down to the truck. But when he looked inside, he gasped. Sitting in the driver’s seat, was a man, bleeding and unconscious. He was gasping for air, and his eyelids were half closed. It looked like a scene from a scary movie.

Officer Devers tried to get him to wake up, but after only a few short moments, the man’s eyes rolled back into his head, and he stopped breathing.

“I was able to step up to that truck with him, he was taking very, very little, gasping breaths, hardly like he was alive at all. Our academy is so extensive in its training that at that point my mind just essentially went on autopilot. I just did what I knew I had to do,” commented Devers.

Eric knew he didn’t have much time left because the man was already dying in his arms. He quickly started performing CPR, and luckily, a passerby came to help as well. Devers performed CPR, while the passerby held his head upright. They continued to do this until the EMS arrived.

Devers can be heard over his dash cam yelling, “Don’t you die on me! Come on, open your eyes!”

After the emergency medical crew arrived on the scene, the man, John Depue, was then taken to the hospital, where they treated him for his injuries, and luckily were able to keep him alive.

But Devers was absolutely shocked when they told him that if he hadn’t acted so quickly, and hadn’t performed CPR, Depue wouldn’t still be alive today. Devers is a true hero.

We are so thankful that Devers was around at the time of the accident, and was able to save Depue’s life. His act of bravery was truly outstanding! We don’t know how to thank him enough, and neither does Depue.

“How can you say ‘thank you’ for saving your life? I definitely think he was my angel that day,” commented Depue.
